London is biiiiiiiiig. It is no walking city, and, though there are many cyclists in London, there are too many cars and taxis and double decker buses to turn me off cycling on its roads, forever. 

The tubes network in London is complex. There are trains, underground tubes, overground ones, trams, buses.. You may need to get your head around which ones to take to go where, but one thing you don't have to worry about how you are going to pay for these transport options. All you need is: an Oyster card. 

Instead of getting paper tickets, you can travel with a plastic travel card. Many large cities are adopting the same principle. Get an Oyster card at your nearest big Tube station. Top it up to the amount you need, and tap on (and off) while using public transport around London. If you need to top up, you can always put more credit in along the way.
