Recital: Estrella Quartet, 2 pianos, 8 hands
Thursday, July 12, 2012
S and I went to a music concert at uni last night. It had been a while since we had gone to a cultural event, so we were pretty excited. The university holds several concerts throughout the year, but I never seemed to have the time to go until this night. And goodness, was I glad to have gone.
Estrella Quartet consists of four very talented girls, students of the University of Auckland. This was their farewell recital because they were off to London the next day, as part of their winning a recent Chamber music competition.
The programme was a mixture of classical, jazz, blues, and contemporary. Our favourite was the last number on the list, called Fantasy on Carmen. It was a fun piece with not just 8, but TWELVE hands on two pianos, the players moving around them. The picture above shows five people on one piano. Crazy!
The music theatre was crowded with friends, family, and music enthusiasts like us. It was really enjoyable and I am glad S was able to join me. Afterwards we grabbed a bit to eat at Mezze, chatting the night away until the bar was about to close. Haha, what else is new? Perhaps the next cultural outing will take us to an International Film Festival film screening...
