Turkey Day 7: Market day

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

On Thursdays, Ayvalik comes alive. It's the village market day. The once deserted streets are suddenly packed with stands after stands of trinkets, clothes, artworks, and, at this time of the year, a crazy amount of red, red undies. It's good luck to wear red undies on New Year's in Turkey, as in many other cultures around the world.
With Turkish Liras only a third of Euros, it is a good occasion to go shopping in Turkey. We bought socks and spices, a few more gifts for friends back home. No new red undies for us, sorry. I made a note to self to explore more of the Turkish grocery shops once back in Bordeaux. There are so many spices I want to get to know!
